from above

This has been on my mind a lot lately and I finally told myself I should sit down and share it.

Not long after we lost our baby at 10 weeks on April 25th, I bought myself a necklace. It is a silver birds' nest with a single pearl egg in the middle. I thought it was the perfect, beautiful piece to commemorate and be reminded of our baby...to in a small way, have my baby with me wherever I go.

Within the past few weeks, a robin built her nest in a hanging petunia plant on our porch. Upon seeing the empty nest the first time, Shon removed it. The very next day, the nest was back...and very shortly thereafter, there were three small, perfect robin eggs- the most beautiful shade of authentic "robin's egg blue." I told my husband we just couldn't get rid of it. I didn't have the heart. I immediately felt a connection to this momma robin and her nest even though I didn't say so at the time.

The next thing we knew, we had two, tiny, pink-with-white-fuzz baby birds in the nest in our hanging petunia plant....and one or two days later the third decided to hatch and join his siblings. In a matter of days they began to look like real robins...we noticed that their eyes opened...they started to get their coloring and feathers...and now, only a couple of weeks later they are "toddler robins"...filling up and spilling over the nest. Momma robin always flies off when we come out to look at her babies...but always stays nearby.

I could choose to look at this as a mere coincidence of nature....or I can choose to look at this as a tiny gift from God...his way of reaching out from Heaven to earth to say, "I am with you. Better days are ahead. In the midst of your grief over death, here is a token of life- right on your front porch."

The symbolism here is too much for me to ignore. Our God loves us and cares for us....and while a robin's nest may seem so ordinary....it is in fact, extraordinary. Even though I can't directly see or hear or touch my Savior...he reaches out to me from Heaven. The God who created the universe...who is the creator of all things....who has an exponential amount of other children to worry about reaches out to me...to us...to show us that he is right here with us.

He uses nature to show me that there is HOPE.
