Outside Fun (and a blogging problem...argh)

Last week, we had a few very warm days for fall - in the 80's!  Holden and I got tired of being cooped up in the house so we headed outside for some fun.  Holden is kind of at a challenging stage to be playing outside because he still crawls everywhere (even though he CAN walk).  But I just put some pants on him and let him go at it.  It was a beautiful day and I so enjoyed being outside with my boy and taking some pictures of him (with my actual camera!).  We just wished Daddy could have been there, too!

So yeah... half of my pictures uploaded sideways even though they are saved to my computer rotated correctly.  Why does this happen?!  The only way I can avoid this is by uploading my pictures straight from my facebook...and I don't always want to put ALL of my pictures on facebook.  Anyone else have this problem or know what I can do to fix it?!?!  There's no way to rotate the pics within blogger, is there?  :(

Holden at 13 months...

Now that Holden is ONE, I am no longer going to take a monthly photo or commit to doing a monthly post.  I think I will just make a post here and there of what he's up to.  I definitely want to remember all of the fun and cute things he does right now. :)

Words: "Dada" and "Duh" are his most frequently spoken words.  "Duh" means Doug. :)  He also says, "Doh" ALL of the time.  He mostly says it to say, "Dog," but he also just says it randomly.  I think it has multiple meanings but I'm not sure what they are.  He also says Mama (you have to pryyyy it out of him), "Die" for bye, "Bam bam!," "Thank you" (it doesn't sound quite like that...but I don't really know how to portray how he says it via typing!), and "uh-oh."

Animal Sounds: Lion, Elephant (with hand raised for trunk), Sheep, and Rooster.  He has learned these from a couple of books that he looks at/we read a lot.

Favorite things to play: Looking at books, walking behind/pushing a ride-on toy around, getting on and off of ride on toy, getting on and off of the couch, playing the music on his dump truck and dancing to it, dancing to any music at all.

Walking: He is still not quite a full-time walker but you are choosing to walk more and more every day. He is really a great walker but still prefers crawling if he wants to get somewhere really fast.  (It is hilarious how fast he can crawl.)  He recently started standing up from crawling/sitting on his own one day and now does it constantly.

Teeth: He basically has 6.  4 on top (2 of them aren't all the way in yet but close) and 2 on bottom.

Eating:  He is a great eater and drinks a ton of milk.  It is nothing for him to drink a 9 oz. sippy cup of milk in one sitting.  We almost have to restrain him from drinking too much - sometimes he drinks too much at once and then spits up some of it as a result.  Some of his favorite foods are pancakes, cheese, almost any fruit, cheerios, crackers, and the Gerber raviolis and turkey/chicken sticks.  (They may seem kind of gross but they're easy and he loves them.)  We're working on veggies...

Sleeping: Bedtime is around 8-8:30 PM and he usually wakes up around 8-8:30 AM...but the time change has set him back a little recently.  He's a great sleeper, knock on wood.  The only two places he will sleep is in the crib or the car seat.  He also sleeps fine in the pack-in-play at the grandparents' houses.  He sleeps with a light blue small square minky blankie and a little stuffed pug.  I think he does cuddle with them during the night but he is not attached to either during the day.  He always plays with his ear/s when he gets sleepy/while going to sleep. He takes a morning nap that lasts 1-2 hours and sometimes a second nap which varies in length. He had given up the second nap but with the time change causing him to get up earlier at times, we sometimes get a second one out of him.

Shon and I were talking yesterday about how much we LOVE this age.  It is just SO MUCH FUN!  He does something new practically every day and it is so amazing to see him doing new things.  We think every little thing he does is amazing.  I now understand why every parent thinks their child is a genius - it's because they used to just be a little nugget in your belly...and then a helpless/newborn and infant... so watching them do ANYthing independently seems absolutely amazing.  :)  At this age, they are becoming more independent and yet they are still so very dependent and still sweet and babyish.  Just sitting on our laps/snuggling has increased which we love.  It's just a great age.

It's fun to be one!

Holden's 1st Haircut

Holden got his 1st haircut on October 17, 2012.  I had been holding off because I just felt like it was taking away some of his "baby-hood" to cut his hair.  But I had finally had enough of sweeping his bangs out of his eyes and trying to tame his side "wings." ;)  He was terrified and cried practically the whole time, which I didn't expect.  Lauren did a great job though- she cut off just the right amount.  I actually LOVE his "big boy" hair!

Baby #2 - Finding Out

We found out we were expecting Baby #2 on July 30, 2012.  Let's back up a bit.

After having Holden, the subject of birth control came up of course.  When asked at my 6 week post-partum check-up if I wanted to be on birth control, I declined.  Before Holden and our struggle with trying to get pregnant and miscarriage, I had been on the pill.  I do not know if being on the pill caused us to take longer getting pregnant...but I know I have read that it can.  Going back on it just didn't feel right.  It is a little scary to me.  Whenever we were ready to have another baby, I didn't want it to take longer due to having been on the pill.

That wasn't the only reason though.  Shon and I talked and we agreed that it just did not seem right to have wanted to conceive so badly before - trying for six months, miscarrying at 10 weeks, and then trying for nine months before getting pregnant with H - but to now "not want" one enough to prevent it with the pill.  It didn't feel right to prevent what we had so badly wanted before.  We were also convicted that it seemed a little too "in control" for us... on a spiritual level.  We wanted a baby on our timeline - we knew what we wanted and when we wanted it.  And now, we were just going to say, "No God, we don't want one now.  We'll want another one when we want one....and when that time comes, we'll hope for it to happen right away?"  Seemed demanding.  Seemed that we were just blatantly telling God, "Thanks for blessing us with the child we wanted so badly, but please step aside now and don't give us anymore until we decide it's time."  Just.didn't.seem.right.  We also had the thought that in leaving it up to God, perhaps we would be spared the whole "trying" thing altogether.  That time period when we so desperately wanted to have a baby but could not get pregnant/lost a baby has left its mark on us.  That pain and frustration and desperation will never be forgotten.

That said, we still prevented.  We didn't hand over our timetable to Him completely.  I think we were a little scared and understandably so.  We still prevented, that is, except for this one time.  (Too much information?  I don't know how to tell the story without saying that, sorry.)  Of course, we didn't think much of it.  What were the chances when it had taken so long before?  What were the chances the timing was right...that everything would fall into place and make a baby?  No way. That might happen to other people, but it just didn't seem like it was something that would ever happen to us.

A couple weeks later I was feeling very tired.  Unusually tired.  I had been running during this time.  One day I went out to run and I just felt like my legs weighed a ton each.  I felt like I had no energy.  I told Shon about it but that was about it.  A couple of days later, Shon (and Holden) went with me on a run.  Again, I kept having to stop because I just could not do it.  I just didn't have it in in me. It was very odd.  This is when we really got suspicious.  I had mentioned the possibility previously, but this is when Shon actually started wondering himself.

So... we bought a test.  I took it and left it in the bathroom.  I sat down on the couch and told Shon he could go check it.  We discussed how there really was just "no way" it would be positive.  Even still, I think we both had a feeling.  I knew as soon as I saw Shon heading toward me down the hallway that it was positive.  He was trying to play it cool and act like nothing was up.  He handed me the test, smile on face.  I reacted along the lines of, "Oh....my....gosh."  We just couldn't believe it.  We already had a baby - a 10 month old baby.  Was this really happening?!

We decided then that we wanted to keep the pregnancy a secret until after Holden's first birthday and party.  We just wanted him to have his first year to himself so to speak.  We wanted the focus to be on him at his party.  I told Shon that I just wanted to not worry (past m/c history made me somewhat of a pregnant worry-wart) and to just focus on Holden.  And I did.  Being pregnant is so much different when you already have a child.  Naturally, they keep you busy and require all of your attention.  There isn't nearly as much time and energy to devote to your pregnancy.  I think this is part of the reason why the secret wasn't impossible to keep.

And now... here we are.  I'm 15 weeks pregnant today!  I can tell it is going to fly by.  I still barely believe I'm pregnant... it is so hard to grasp.  I am believing it more and more every day...and getting more and more excited every day.  I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about having "two under 2."  But Shon says over and over again, "It's gonna be awesome" and I believe him.  ;)

I also believe that God chose this time for us to have another baby for a reason.  I rest assured that this is within His plan and His will.  It is really quite amazing - to have tried so hard last time and to have not tried at all this time.  God is writing this story.  Once again, He has given me a story where there otherwise may not have been one... and I intend to give Him the glory.

We are so thankful.  We are so thankful to be blessed with another child without the struggles we feared we may have to face again.  I think about and pray for those who desperately desire to become parents every day.  I know so many of you are out there in the thick of it right now.  I am hoping and praying for you.  My heart breaks for you because I know your pain, at least to some degree.  Keep praying, hoping, having faith, and dreaming.  None of these things are in vain. I believe He has a plan for you and I have learned to fully trust His plans and His timing over my own.

Holden's 1st Birthday Party!

We celebrated Holden's 1st birthday with a party on Saturday, September 29th - two days after he turned ONE!  We had a lot of family and friends in our tiny house... but we were blessed with awesome weather which allowed many guests to eat outside in the garage.  People were able to hang out together outside and all of the kiddos were free to play outdoors.  It didn't even seem that crowded... which is pretty amazing when you have 30 people in a 1200 sq. ft. house!

It was a wonderful evening.  Holden was so happy and social during the party.  I feared he would be a little wigged out with all of the people... but he wasn't AT ALL.  The highlight for me was watching him smash his cake.  It took him a while to get into it but eventually he dug in.  The cutest part was that he kept taking breaks to clap for himself and say, "Yaaaaaay."  :)  It was adorable and I think it was one of those moments that will be everlasting in my mind's eye.

One thing I failed to get photos of was the food.  We ordered BBQ pulled pork from a local restaurant.  I made a huge bowl of pasta salad and my mom made a huge bowl of potato salad.  We also had chips, animal crackers and cheese puffs for the kids, and my mother-in-law brought a spaghetti casserole for the little kids who weren't crazy about BBQ.  It was all delicious!

And now...for some photos of the big day!  We didn't have a strong "theme."  I would call it more of a "loose theme."  I call it "swinging/baby swing/outdoors/red & aqua."  Ha!  The idea was centered around Holden's love for being outside and for swinging.  Can't really call it a "swinging/swinger party"... that just doesn't sound right. ;)  I ordered most of the decor from etsy, so I will list the links below the pictures.  Enjoy!

The Cake:

The cake came from a local bakery.  I would say it was my favorite piece of "decor!"
It was so beautiful! We just loved it!  The tree with the baby swing was the idea I took to the bakery and they
"whimsey-d" it up with the addition of the bird (LOVE) the grass, pebbles, and clouds.
